Kaombo is the flagship project of Block 32

I’ve been the Block 32 Asset Manager since August 2016. I manage our day-to-day relations with the other oil companies in the consortium: ExxonMobil of the U.S., AngolaTotal AngolaShow more’s Sonangol, China’s Sinopec and Portugal’s Galp. That’s four different continents and many different cultures, which is both a challenge and a gift. Moreover, Kaombo is a very large undertaking: at its peak, we had 15,000 people around the world working on the project simultaneously. We logged over 110 million man-hours to develop the project, and in FrancePays FranceShow more alone it’s been responsible for 1,500 full-time equivalent positions for more than three years. You To give you a better idea of the sheer scale of the project, the two FPSOs, Kaombo Norte and Kaombo Sul, contain 150,000 tons of metal — that’s 15 times the weight of the Eiffel Tower. What’s more, if you piled all 68,000 engineering documents into a single stack of paper, it would stand 70 meters tall — higher than the Arc de Triomphe. In order to make Kaombo a success, Total debuted innovations in every aspect of the project, from engineering to contracts to operations. Today, Kaombo is the flagship project in Block 32, but there are other projects being developed or awaiting sanction that are designed to capitalize on Block 32’s reserves, and we’re on track to fulfill our Billion Barrel Roadmap.
