Jean-Pierre Amory - Chairman and CEO of Petrofina

Born April 4, 1925 in Mons. ICMi of the University of Louvain in 1950 and Master of Petroleum Engineer (USA). He joined the Group on October 1, 1951. For three years he did internships and assignments abroad, before becoming Managing Director of the company that would become Fina Petroleos de AngolaTotal AngolaShow more, a company where he stayed for nearly fifteen years, rising through the ranks from drilling engineer to technical director and then Managing Director. Thus he was a pioneer in this country that had been ignored by international companies until then. He was associated with the first discovery, in 1955, in Luanda. In 1968, he was appointed Managing Director of Belgochim/Montefina. His tenure was marked by the launch, construction and start-up of the Feluy plant. He therefore has a dual competence, upstream and petrochemicals. In 1974 he became Petrofina's General Manager Exploration, then Managing Director in 1979, Vice-Chairman of the Management Board in 1980, and finally Chairman and CEO of Petrofina from 1985 to 1990, forming with Pierre de Tillesse, Vice-Chairman, a "team" which several sources point out worked very well, and which had to manage the oil counter-shock. The period was marked by investments in major petrochemical sites (Port-Arthur, Antwerp, Feluy and its research laboratory) and the exit from Egypt in the upstream sector, in which the Group acquired assets in several African countries, Australia and the United States. The most significant event of this mandate was the acquisition of BP's 50% stake in the Antwerp refinery in 1988. Jean-Pierre Amory has been a director of several Group subsidiaries. He died on 24 March 2017.
