Born on December 23, 1927 in La Baule (Loire-Atlantique). Lycée Louis-le-Grand (Paris), École polytechnique, École nationale supérieure de la statistique et des études économiques (Insee). Director of Insee from 1953 to 1957. Joined the Compagnie française des pétroles in 1957, in the Economic Studies Department of the Commercial Division. In 1966 he was appointed Chairman of Total East Africa. In 1969 he became Director of Refining and Distribution for foreign subsidiaries (1970-1976), then Director of Supply and Distribution (1977-1979). In 1980, he was appointed Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Compagnie française de raffinage, which became CRD Total FrancePays FranceShow more in 1986. It was under his responsibility that Total's downstream operations were created by merging refining and marketing. It was also under his direction that Total's refining was able to adapt to the unfavourable economic conditions resulting from the oil shocks. He was the man behind the rationalization of the downstream sector. In 1980 he was appointed member of the Executive Committee and Director of Compagnie française des pétroles.
