Total in Uganda

1955, Total begins its distribution business.

1963, the operation «Change of Brand» of Ozo in Total begins. The distribution company Ozo East Africa takes the name of Total Oil Products East Africa (T.O.PE.A.).

1990, Petrofina signs an exploration and exploitation agreement in Uganda, in the Mobutu and Edouard lakes area. The Group also signs an agreement with Zaire to explore and possibly exploit hydrocarbons in the other part of Lake Mobutu (currently Albert Lake).

1991, Petrofina takes upstream participations.

1996, TOTAL takes 100% control of its distribution subsidiary.

In November 2008, Total concluded an agreement for the acquisition of marketing and logistics assets in Kenya and Uganda. The operation involves 165 stations, distribution activities for aviation products as well as several logistics sites and a lubricant manufacturing plant.

2011, Total signs an agreement in March with Tullow and CNOOC. Total holds a 33.33% interest in the EA-1 (Total, Operator) and EA-2 licences, in the Kaniwataba licence and in the Kingfisher production licence. They are located in the Albert Lake area where oil resources have already been identified and have significant exploration potential.

In February 2012, Total E & P Uganda begins operations in the districts of Buliisa and Nwoya in the Lake Albert region (currently the Tilenga Project).

2012, international university partnerships are developed in connection with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), the French Petroleum Institute (IFP) and the Institut d'études politiques de Paris (IEP). Among other things, the Group signs a partnership with the University of Makerere in Kampala.

2013, at the initiative of the Government of Uganda, discussions are underway for the construction of a refinery to be developed in two phases (30 Mb/d in a first step and a second phase of +30 Mb/d) and an export pipeline.

2014, 5 development plans are submitted to the authorities on the EA-1, Ngiri, Jobi-Rii, Mpyo, Gunya and Jobi East license.

In January 2015, Total Uganda reveals the new image of its gas stations with a more contemporary and environmentally friendly look.

2016, in April, the Government of Uganda decides that the oil from Lake Albert will be exported through a pipeline (EACOP) passing through Tanzania, with the port of Tanga as its outlet. In August, Total obtains production licences for EA-1 and EA-2. The partners of the joint venture of Ugandan project are launching the engineering work (Front End Engineering and Design – FEED) of the upstream part of the project as well as the pipeline.

In January 2017, TOTAL signs an agreement to acquire 21.57% of the 33.33% interest held by Tullow in the EA-1, EA-1A, EA-2 and EA-3 licenses. TOTAL becomes the operator of the EA-2 licence, instead of Tullow, which allows to obtain significant gains in terms of project efficiency and synergies.
