Total enters in Tanzania in 1960 with the acquisition of the French Omnium des Pétroles (OFP). The country is then called Tankanyka. The OFP controls an entity, the Société Française des Pétrole de Somalie, which distributes petroleum products in several East African countries, including Tanzania. The OFP distributes oil under the Ozo brand.

 

1960 - 1970

  • 1963, in January, the Ozo network goes under the Total brand. At the same time the new depot of Dar es Salam enters into operation. Total’s activities are carried out by the subsidiary Total Oil Product Tanzania, whose first mention appeared in the 1966 annual report.

  • 1969, creation of the Society on May the 19th. The assets of the Tanzania branch of TOP (E.A) are transferred to the new company for the price of TSH:Q.500.000. The former "TOTAL Tanzania", which became "Petroleum Services Ltd" on 19-3-1969, was deregistered on october the 5th of 1969.

1971 - 2019

  • 1985, Elf obtains the licence of Ras Winde in the Strait of Zanzibar.

  • 1986, Petrofina took a 25% interest in a licence. The company gives up its interests in 1990.

  • 1989, TPDC purchases some 300,000 tonnes of product. It has 72 outlets and sells 69,000 tonnes of products. The subsidiary’s supplies are then supplied by the state-owned company TPDC, which has a refinery but also imports products.

  • 2016, the Marketing & Services branch of the Group announces the acquisition of assets in East Africa (Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania). The acquisition is intended to strengthen the supply and logistics facilities in the region to accelerate the development of the Tanzania gas station network.

  • 2017, the Group finalizes the acquisition of assets in Tanzania, which allows it to strengthen its supply and logistics system in East Africa and accelerate the development of the network of gas stations with nearly 100 additional service, particularly in Tanzania. Total acquires a lubricant production plant and the associated commercial activities that allow it to develop there as well as in neighbouring countries.
