The first traces of the Group in Italy date back to 1930 with the entry of Petrofina through the SIPOM, a subsidiary which had a cracking unit near Naples. But it is really from the 1950s that Total, Fina and Elf will be active both in the Italian upstream and in downstream.

Downstream

  • 1930, Petrofina enters in Italy through SIPOM, a subsidiary of which has a cracking unit near Naples.

  • 1952, May, the CFP signs a contract to sell crude oil to the Trieste refinery.

  • 1953, Petrofina buys in Italy three small refineries belonging to the family company Permolio, in Genoa, Rome and Milan, as well as a network of 500 gas stations, taking 70% of the company. Creation of Purfina Italiana.

  • 1954, the CFP buys 47% of the holding company that is the head of the Trieste refining company and the distribution company Alto Adriatico, carrying the Aquila brand, which also distributed in Austria and Yugoslavia. Shortly after, the CFP and Fiat were on equal footing in this company, they bought the shares of the small shareholders. The Trieste refinery had a processing capacity of 1.2 MT/year.

  • 1955, Purfina Italiana continues its development in Italy. It will buy, in the fifties, the Galetti in Florence (with a refinery), SAPA in Bergamo, Gardella in Milan, Gatti in San Remo. Decommissioning of the Florence refinery and upgrading of the Genoa refinery.

  • 1956, Incorporation of the company Raffineria di Roma, in which PurFina participates on an equal footing with an Italian company ENI, already associated with Petrofina in Egypt.

  • 1957, Fiat gives part of its share in the Trieste refinery and the Aquila network to the CFP, which increases to 70%. Creation of Air Total Italy.

  • 1959, the CFP acquires the Lombarda Petroli, which owns the Monza refinery and a network in the Milanese region. In addition, the capacity of the Trieste refinery reaches 2.3 MT/year. Buying of OFP (Omnium français des pétroles) assets that include the Mantua refinery (900 KT/year).

1960 - 1985

Upstream

  • 1961, Petrobelge takes interests in the research of hydrocarbons in Italy.

  • 1963, Creation by Petropar of a subsidiary in Italy for Elf Aquitaine. The subsidiary discovers the same year a gas field in Porto Cannone in Italy

  • 1966, discovery of the deposits of San Stefano (gas) and of San Giorgio (oil).

  • 1970, small discoveries of gas in licences where Petrofina has interests (Accettura, the Apennines, Riccione Mare).

  • 1972, Elf begins the production of Stan Stefano (gas) .

  • 1973, Elf puts in production San Giorgio Mare. 

  • 1974, Elf discovers the oil deposit of Santa Maria Mare .

  • 1975, Elf discovers Rospo Mare in Italy (oil, offshore).

  • 1979, The CFP obtains new licences in Italy.

  • 1980, The CFP returns two licences and enters on six blocks. 

  • 1981, the CFP discovers the BR148 field.

  • 1982, the CFP confirms the discovery of Bonaccia.

  • 1984, Petrofina takes new licences in Italy.

  • 1984, Elf discovers Mafalda (gas).

  • 1985, Total obtains new licences in Italy.

  • 1985, Elf discovers Dorotea 1 (Gas, offshore) and PetroFina makes small discoveries of gas in the region of Ancone. Elf Italia puts in production two gas fields in the offshore of the Adriatic: Mormora Mare and Vongola Mare.

 

Downstream

  • 1960, the CFP holds in Italy 6% of the market, with eight deposits and 1800 points of sale.

  • 1961, the CFP holds 100% of the refinery of Trieste and the Aquila network. It starts the modernization of the refinery.

  • 1963, the refineries of Trieste and Mantua received important developments allowing a 23 % increase over a year of the quantities of handled crude oil.

  • 1964, Petrofina develops itself on the LPG market in Italy.

  • 1965, The Rome refinery begins its production.

  • 1967, Elf begins the marketing of its products in Italy.

  • 1969, The CFP carries the capacity of the refinery of Trieste in 3 MT/yeat, that makes Italy counting for 6 MT in the refining capacities of the Group.

  • 1982, Elf Italiana buys the network of Mach in Italy.

  • 1984, Petrofina takes networks in Italy.

  • 1985, The CFP decides to close Aquila's refinery in Italy, in addition to those of Klarenthal and Duisburg, announced in 1984.

1986 - 1991

Upstream

  • 1987, Discoveries for Petrofina in Italy (Morro d'Oro, San Mauro and Torrente Tecchio).

  • 1987, Elf Aquitaine puts the Rospo Mare field into production, Total increases its stake in the Bonaccia gas field (from 50 to 70%).

  • 1988, Elf Aquitaine rehabilitates Rospo Mare facilities and drills three new wells.

  • 1989, Elf Italiana participates in five boreholes in the Marche, Petrofina finds important indications in Tempa Rossa.

  • 1990, Elf participates in the drilling of six wells for the complementary development of the Rospo Mare B platform.

Downstream

  • 1987, Total sells its retail refining subsidiary, resulting in a decline of 3 MT/year for Group sales.

  • 1988, Sanofi buys two Italian perfume companies, Florbath Profumi di Parma Spa and Fendi Profumi Spa, linked to renowned designers Krizia and Fendi.

  • 1989, Elf Antargaz takes control of the Italian autogas Adriatica.

  • 1990, SLEA (Elf) acquires the industrial lubricant company Milloil, Elf acquires Cabo Campanelli and Union Gas, which are grouped under the Elf Gas brand name.

  • 1990, Petrofina gives up its LPG business in Italy but acquires petrol stations.

  • 1990, Atochem (Elf) acquires the Italian Spinetta plant in Ausimont, specializing in organic peroxides, and acquires Profilia Fersina in the Italian PVC windows market. Elf acquires Vedril (technical polymers).

  • 1991, Elf acquires several small LPG distribution companies in Italy, which merged with Elf Gas Italiana.

1992 - 2019

Upstream

  • 1992, New discoveries for Petrofina around Tempa Rossa.

  • 1992, Total develops industrial customers to place its gas production including a combined-cycle power plant in Italy to take advantage of the Bonaccia field.

  • 1992, Elf, mothballing of the production of the Italian fields of Sarago and Santa Maria a Mare.

  • 1993, Petrofina puts San Mauro, Osimo, Villatorre and Settefinestre gas fields into production.

  • 1994, Petrofina begins the production of Leoni gas field.

  • 1996, Petrofina and Total achieve positive results at Tempa Rossa (Gorgoglione well). Elf returns Sarago field to production.

 

Downstream

  • 1992, Petrofina reduced its "owner" capacity, selling the Fina Italy subsidiary. Fina sells  elements of its network in Italy in particular to strengthen elsewhere.

  • 1992, Total’s Ink business takes control of the Italian company Polichem.

  • 1993, Elf acquires a hydrocyanic acetone plant.

  • 1994, Cray Valley (Total) purchases the Italian company Ferri Chimica.

  • 1995, Total signs a Gas Purchase and Electricity Sale Agreement for a new 150 MW power plant in Teverola.

  • 1995, Under the agreement with Sterling Winthrop, Sanofi divests chemical platforms in Italy.

  • 1998, Elf sells its assets in Italy.

  • 1998, Bostik (Total) acquires Sitech, a subsidiary of Ciba in Italy.

  • 2010, Signing of an agreement with ERG for the creation of a joint venture in the Refining and Marketing sector in Italy with a 49% share distribution for Total and 51% for ERG giving birth to Totalerg.
