The presence of oil in Congo has been known since the late 1920s, when a well-known geologist, V. Lebedeff, working for the governor of French Equatorial Africa and ONCL (National Office for Liquid Fuels), discovers seepage near Pointe-Indienne. Until 1960, oil researches in Congo was carried out within the framework of French Equatorial Africa and remains closely linked to that of Gabon.

Refining-Distribution
- 1948, the CFP creates the French Company of distribution of petroleum products in French Equatorial Africa (CFDPAEF). A first 4 566 ton cargo, bought from the CFR (French Company of refining, subsidiary of the CFP), is received by the deposit of Pointe-Noire. At first, this deposit is adapted to white products; it receives these in bulk and put them in barrel to market them in French Equatorial Africa and in nearby colonies.
- 1948, the Council decides not to build gas stations for the moment, but to place pumps at garage owners and to supply them in bulk.

- 1952, the CFDPAEF is acquired by CFDPA (Total). It becomes in 1953 the Company of the deposits Ocean-Congo. The CFDPA holds 60 %, the competitors 40 %. It manages the deposit of Pointe-Noire, which is opened to diesel and LPG, and which is going to be in charge of the supply of the Gabon.
- 1953, The new company launches in 1953 the enlargement of the deposit of Pointe-Noire and the construction of the deposit of Brazzaville and, through the Company of storing of petroleum products, those of the deposit of Bangui and a deposit of gasoline - aviation in Brazzaville.
- 1954, in October, the Council decides to adopt gradually the brand Total for its sales. AEF faces an economic crisis which impacts the volumes of sale and the prices during 1953 and 1954.
- 1955, the deposit of Pointe-Noire delivers 38 141 m3, almost the double of the previous year, and the deposit of Brazzaville 12 915 m3.
- In 1958, the Company of the deposits Ocean-Congo acquires a holding in the Company for the development of French Congo, which aims at helping companies for which the activity will be bound to the industrial groups established on the axis Pointe-Noire - Brazzaville.
- 1959, the Company of the deposits Ocean Congo holds on the whole AEF 11 deposits and 458 places of distribution, with a 20,9% market share.
