  • 1997, Total acquires Argon, a distributor of LPG.

  • In 1998, in the lubricants sector, Petrofina opens a representative office in Argentina.

  • In 1999, TotalFina starts producing the Argo field and commissiones LPG extraction facilities at Canadon Alpha (Argentina). TotalFina sells its stake in El Huemul field. LPG extractions start on the Cuenca Austral license. A compression train is attached to the Canadon Alfa plant. A new gas treatment unit is commissioned at the San Roque site.

  • 2000, Total signs an agreement for the acquisition of electric generation assets.

  • In 2001, developments in the Carina and Aries gas fields are launched. Both fields are off Tierra del Fuego. Total acquires 63.9% of Hidroneuquén, a company owning gas plants in Buenos Aires and Neuquén.

  • In 2002, the Rincon Chico XP101 exploration well drilled on the San Roque permit (TotalFinaElf operator 24.7%) is positive. The increase of 9.5 Mm3 / d (335 Mcf / d) to 11.5 Mm3 / d (406 Mcf / d) of the export capacity of the Aguada Pichana treatment center (TotalFinaElf operator 27, 3%) are completed. As a result of the Argentinean crisis, drilling of the Carina-Aries development wells (Offshore of Tierra del Fuego), launched in 2001, as well as various small projects in Tierra del Fuego and in the Neuquén region are postponed. Only the construction of the Carina-Aries offshore infrastructure is progressing normally.

  • 2003, on the field of Aguada Pichana (TOTAL operator 27.3%), the medium pressure compression unit starts and a new project of the same type is launched on the San Roque field (TOTAL operator 24.7%) so to maintain the production plateau on these two fields. On the development of Carina-Aries (offshore Tierra del Fuego operator 37.5%), launched in 2001, the construction of the project's offshore infrastructure continues. After the suspension of operations in 2002 (offshore drilling and construction of onshore facilities), because of the crisis in Argentina, the decision is made to restart the project for a production start planned in 2005.

  • 2004, the development project of Carina-Aries (offshore Tierra del Fuego, operator TOTAL, 37.5%) continues with the construction of onshore and offshore infrastructure (two uninhabited platforms located about 80 km from the coast). The drilling of the first Carina wells begins in late 2004. After the drilling of the Geminis (offshore Tierra del Fuego) well was unsuccessful, the CAA-35 exploration license is issued in December. TOTAL enters two new exploration blocks in the Neuquén basin: Ranquil Norte (TOTAL, 50.0%) and Bandurria (TOTAL, 27.3%).

  • 2005, production of the Carina field starts in June. On the Cañadon Alfa plant in the Austral Basin (37.5%), the project to install a fourth medium pressure compressor is launched to adapt to the Carina Aries flow rate the gas injection capacity of the Earth. Fire in the San Martin gas pipeline. TOTAL enters two new exploration blocks: Las Tacanas (50%, operator) and Chasquivil (50%, operator). The Group makes a discovery on the Aguada Pichana permit (Aguada Pichana Norte).

  • 2006, the production of the Aries field starts in January. TOTAL sells in November its 63.9% stake in Central Puerto S.A., a company that owns and operates gas-fired power plants in the Buenos Aires region and in the province of Neuquén.
